Every year since 1984 the Pope has invited Young People to celebrate World Youth Day each year. Most years this happens at local levels, but every 2 or 3 years the Pope invites young people to join him for a special international festival. The diocese of Arundel & Brighton has been represented at most of the international World Youth Days. We took over 50 people to Sydney in 2008, and there were large groups in Cologne (2005), Toronto (2002) and many of the others. We’ve just returned from World Youth Day 2011 in Madrid – 129 of us went! We spent five ‘Days in the Diocese’ in Salamanca, followed by the festivities and events of the World Youth Day celebrations in Madrid. Check out the official World Youth Day website and the other pages here on our youth website for much more information.
The next World Youth Day will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2013!!! Lucky Rio!! Pope Benedict XVI has announced the theme for Rio: “Go and make disciples of all peoples”. Right now the Youth Office is looking at various options for going ……… watch this space…………. The WYD Cross and Icon have arrived in Brazil and the official website has been announced.
